✨ Shimizu, Aridagawa Town – A Hidden Gem in Wakayama ✨

Staff Blog

Tucked away in the mountains of Wakayama, Shimizu is a village filled with natural blessings and the warmth of its people.

This is the birthplace of Budo Sansho (grape pepper), which boasts the largest production in Japan.
In early summer, the fields shine with vibrant green peppercorns, releasing a refreshing fragrance that clears both body and mind with a single deep breath.

Shimizu is also home to the traditional craft of Yasuda Paper.
Made from pure mountain water and the finest natural fibers, this handmade washi paper once rivaled the famous papers of Ehime. Even today, its soft texture and timeless beauty continue to bring peace and elegance into daily life.

During our visit, we were guided around the Aragi Island area by Mr. Morimoto, a local storyteller and guide.
From Kompira Shrine to Aragi Island’s breathtaking terraced rice fields and Zouou Shrine, every stop came alive with his humor and local insights, making our time there truly unforgettable.

In Shimizu, you can experience a rare harmony of:
🌿 The aroma of Sansho pepper
🌾 Scenic terraced rice fields
💧 Crystal-clear streams
📜 The warmth of Yasuda Paper
😊 Heartfelt encounters with local people

It’s a journey that touches all five senses, and offers a richness of spirit that you simply cannot find in the city.
Come and discover Shimizu — where nature, tradition, and people welcome you with open arms.
