I recently had Yoshi to guide the start of my Kumano Kodo trek. It felt more like going for a hike with a knowledgeable friend than spending the day with a tour guide. He knows all about the history and key scenery to point out, I even quizzed him on the art of paper making in Japan and he could tell me all about the trees used to make washi paper, as well as why, when they started doing it and that the emperors would take it with them to write poetry on their pilgrimages! He has a great sense of humour and made quite a tough start (even he admitted the incline for the first kilometre is punishing!) pleasurable. He set me up well to enjoy the rest of my hike and notice some of the things that I would definitely have overlooked had I not had him tell me key pieces of information.
